For years the Gallipolis Police Department had studied the
benefits and feasibility of having a working dog. In October 2000 the Gallipolis
Elks Lodge 107 donated $4,500 to purchase the dog and the program got its real
start. After assessing the needs of the department and what options were
available the department contracted with a Newark, Ohio Police Canine to import
the dog and train the dog and handler. The next step as to pick out a dog that suited the
department's needs. A seven month old Belgian Malinois (pronounced MAL-in-wah)
named "Virago" was chosen by the department as the departments first
canine and Matt Champlin was chosen to be his handler. Virago had been trained
by his Dutch owner since birth and was scheduled to be brought to the United
States and begin training on March 5th 2001 with Champlin for six weeks. The Gallipolis Police Department Canine Team began full
service on April 20th 2001. The Gallipolis Police Canine Team is currently
certified through the State of Ohio, United States Police Canine Association (U.S.P.C.A.)
and North American Police Working Dog Association (N.A.P.W.D.A.) To date the
canine team has recorded a total of eight criminal apprehensions and has
numerous drug finds including one of 4.84 lbs. of cocaine for the Ohio State
Highway Patrol on 09-13-01. |
